about

Composition for voice and piano, commissioned by Peninsular Arts as Part of a series commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the foundation of Plymouth University as a School of Navigation. Performed by Kate and Mike Westbrook. Later Included in the repertoire of The Westbrook Trio.

"To mark the origins of Plymouth University as a School of Navigation, we made the starting point for our song a sea crossing. The simple words take the form of five prayers, which move from the origins of life itself to a death at sea. Cycles, as of tides, waves and weather, are embedded in the sequence of piano chords".

lyrics

Five Voyages
Kate Westbrook

Come, - rain, rainfall,
To water the earth, oceans, the land,
And bring life.

Come, - light, sun,
To penetrate darkness, darkness
And give hope, joy

Come, - soul, soul,
To open up the Blues,
Blues give me song.

Come, - heart
To ease despair, despair,
And let me love, love.

Come tide, come breeze, waves,
Bear me on the sea,
To float out from my body,
Lapped in Salty flood,
And, at the end,
Come peace.
